Exploring Copyright Infringement in the Music Industry

As you may know by now, laws surrounding copyright and the details in determining copyright infringement are about as clear as mud. While we like to think that these are clear yes or no decisions, there is a very large grey area in the midst of everything. To further show this, and to give you a bit of an opportunity to be the judge, we are going to complete a copyright infringement case study today.

In the subsequent pages, you will be greeted with various cases of copyright infringement or where claims have been made. Some of these cases have been decided in court, or settled behind the scenes already, however the goal is for you to decide exactly HOW similar you feel these songs are. After each case, we will see the live poll results on the board, and will witness how unanimous or divided we are in opinion as a class.

Summary of Instructions

  1. You will load up the poll for the current case number
  2. Your teacher will introduce the case by providing some background information and interesting facts
  3. We will listen to a snippet each song (in some cases we might play it twice) and make observations on what we hear
  4. You will determine how similar you believe the two songs are, and input this into the form poll (scale from "not similar at all" to "exactly the same")
  5. After a brief moment has passed for you to vode, your teacher will reveal the poll results and how unified/divided the class was in opinion.
  6. The teacher will load up the next case and repeat these steps.
